It's as if it were the end.
I visited Los Angeles in 1987 as a young,
skinny composer and musician who didn’t even know the profession of “designer” existed.
The America I’d always dreamed of wasn’t there.
Melrose Avenue lacked vitality,
and in a corner of the city lay a slum that tourists couldn’t even approach.
A huge crowd of Health Angels had gathered at Ralph’s.
The hamburgers were delicious, but everything else tasted awful.
There wasn’t a shred of the atmosphere of a city brimming with entertainment;
I felt it was simply a cheap,
provincial town where crime was always just around the corner.
The America I had longed for and dreamed of simply wasn’t there.
